What place for AI in the world of insurance?

Sign of the acceleration of the digital transformation of this sector, in December 2020, Finance Innovation brought together during a webinar, four players in the health sector resolutely turned towards innovation around the theme: "Health AI: What new emerging models for sustainable access to innovation?" » :

  • Luminess (formerly Jouve), specialist in data and digital uses, which simplifies and personalizes digital journeys
  • Harmonie Mutuelle, an entity of Groupe VYV, the leading social protection group in France, and
  • Qape, new health insurance
  • Santexpat.fr, health insurance comparator for expatriates.

This webinar illustrated the major place now occupied by AI in health. On the one hand, solutions have been developed allowing support from medical diagnosis to the management of patient journeys via monitoring by health data. On the other hand, for healthcare establishments and insurance companies, AIs can manage the logistical, administrative and financial back-office.
The speakers showed the major role played by AI in healthcare, and the necessary ethical regulation of its deployment. Here are some excerpts.

David gruson; Director of the Luminess health program, raised the crucial points in the ethical approach to be respected, both in the course of care, but also during the administrative processing of the patient file: "There will be 2 conditions to respect AI in healthcare: informing the patient of the use of AI in his care process and on the other hand the implementation of human supervision on the algorithms used. . [...] Example with KYP AI solution for admission to healthcare facilities that we developed with Luminess with the on-boarding technology used in the banking sector. We will get the patient to take pictures of his documents (CNI, etc.) and the AI will collect the data from image recognition and inject them into the hospital's information system. This makes it possible to be more efficient, and in the epidemic context that we are experiencing, it avoids the concentration of populations in front of the admission desks. Added to this is the gain in ROI when the solution is interoperable with the establishment's administrative management tools, which can reduce the cost of admission by up to 40%.

Nadia Kamal, leads the innovation department ofHarmonie Mutuelle. She clarified how AI can help healthcare professionals and make it possible to act more effectively in prevention, which allows the patient to be in better health, because he is taken care of earlier with already lighter care: “How is AI implemented in the service of health and the world of care? We talk about the medicine of the 4 Ps: prevention, prediction, personalized medicine and participatory medicine. We can intervene in different places at the level of prevention thanks to calculations. We analyze large cohorts from which we can extract certain datas and have prevention estimates according to the public, all this in a very strict and very respected French regulatory approach [...] We are also active in screening at the level particularly of medical deserts where equipment is lacking, in particular in radiology. We have seen the emergence of a system that helps in decision-making for certain radiologists, not necessarily specialists, who can thus use AI for the simplest imaging. This frees up time for the radiologists, whose opinion and eye are sought only for more complicated imaging. This can be done in the context of telemedicine and teleconsultation in areas weakened by non-existent medical systems. »

She adds : “There are 2 notions in what I want to convey. There is a notion of learning, that is to say teaching health professionals these new technologies and making them understand that they are not there to replace it but to help it and treat many more people. On the other hand there is this notion of faster screening which allows faster care and therefore a more interesting state of the patients. »

Christophe Cuniasse, Health director of Qape, indicates that the ethical approach is one of the founding elements of the startup. Algorithms are also there to improve the care pathway: “Today we have a positioning that is ethical because since 2019, it is the second consecutive year, at the request of Bureau Véritas, we have participated in an audit to be labeled Ethical health insurance. What does that mean ? this means that we put the beneficiaries at the center of the system and this also comes down to saying how we position ourselves today on the health insurance market. QAPE is a health insurance that wants to be accessible to all, simple and effective [...] First of all, a transparent, ethical and accessible offer to all, I have already told you about the fact that there was no selection , this means today when we develop our mutual insurance offers we considered that the cost of control was higher than the risk, there are no medical tests, it is the same price for a young retiree as for a 4th age retiree.”
He adds : “We will start from the course of care, we will start from real life. I am going to explain to you what is happening today and what we were able to put behind it and how today we can say that we are integrating AI into our care pathway [. ..] You imagine a patient, a member who asks herself questions. She will be able to connect directly with her phone to the Kovers-e health platform where the first service we offer is a self-diagnosis service. You will enter a certain amount of information, male, female, I indicate my age and my symptoms. This is followed by an anamnesis of the patient, which will be carried out and we will not replace a medical diagnosis, but we will allow the person who uses this service to be able to determine if there is an urgent nature in the face of the symptoms mentioned. .”

Jean-Christophe Pandolfi, founder of Santexpat.fr has demonstrated that in a sector with many insurance companies and products, AI and algorithms are an effective way to make a relevant selection to offer personalized insurance solutions. : “I was talking about the algorithm, in fact when the prospect arrives on our platform, as we work with 12 insurers and each insurer having a multitude of insurance solutions, he finds himself confronted with around 150 insurance solutions. To allow the prospect or the Internet user to find his way around, in the middle of these 150 offers, we have made an algorithm which allows, according to age, family composition, or specific health costs, country of expatriation, to select and reduce the selection to 3 offers which are extendable, but to 3 offers. This allows the Internet user to have real advice perfectly adapted to his profile [...] We realized and at the request of some of our partners that short-term expatriation, in particular for missions short-term professional assignments were quite complex. Particularly within large groups where the needs and travel of all their employees are centralized, and even during the covid period, premium calls from insurers were disproportionate to the reality of travel. So from there we came up with the idea of developing an application that covers the employee during his mission only thanks to the activation of the insurance at the boundary of the telephone outside France and the deactivation when the employee returns to France. It is a complete approach totally GDPR, since the demarcation is not a very specific geolocation of the employee but only a demarcation at the country level. The activation of this cover can be suspended by the employee for his private trips of course, prior to the trip.
